Hávamál 2026-09-28 · Stanza 29 · Interpretation

The balance is in intent and timing. Honest speech does not require saying every true thing the instant it enters your head. Care does not require watering truth down until it means nothing. Hávamál 29 points toward something harder: speak truthfully, but make sure your words are useful before you loose them into the world. A decent rule is: ask whether what you are about to say is true, necessary, and likely to improve understanding. If it is true but needlessly cruel, sharpen the message and remove the spite. If it is kind but dishonest, quit polishing the lie. If emotions are running hot, silence for a moment can be wiser than trying to win the exchange. The stanza is not really arguing for timid speech. It is warning against undisciplined speech. You can be direct as hell and still be deliberate.
